every so often i remember pog stands for pomegranate orange guava and i am struck down by the sheer strength of the butterfly effect
1. Haleakala Dairy creates a juice of passion fruit (not pomegranate, my bad), orange, and guava and calls it “P.O.G.”
2. A game involving milk bottle caps pops up in the 70s, haleakala makes their lids collectable to play that game with the “POG” label
3. Game gets very popular in the 90s, gets called “pogs” based on the og caps (primarily) used having “POG” on them
4. Streamer Ryan Gutierre makes funny haha exaggerated faces in 2010
5. In 2011, same guy releases a video called “Pogs Championship”
6. PogChamp emoji is created, short for the “Pogs Championship’ video, and its used to signify excitement (also sometimes "Play Of the Game” since it shares an acronym)
holy shit this BNHA drama might be one of the funniest things to happen in the history of manga I am YELLING
for people who haven’t been tracking this, the official translation for chapter 321 of the BNHA dropped today and it includes this page:
this is Mineta, one of the franchises’ many side characters, describing how he “fell for” the main character, Deku. Now while there has been some debate over if this translation is accurate, fan translators have dug into the original text and found that the verb he’s using here in Japanese is almost always used to mean “fell in love with” so while this may not pan out in the long run, this appears to be Mineta coming out as either gay or bi.
to put into context how funny this is, BNHA has a massive shipping community (mostly centered around various combinations of the male leads) who have been begging for gay representation in the series for YEARS. There are people who have gone to Johnlock levels of trutherism for some of these ships like it’s that insane.
But Mineta is NOT one of those characters that people like shipping with the other boys. In fact, Mineta is, by far, the most hated character in the whole series. Mineta is nearly universally regarded as being annoying, unfunny, and awful. His entire personality is that he’s a lecherous pervert who will take every opportunity he can get to peep on or sexually harass the girls. People fucking DISPISE this guy. There are well populated tags on AO3 for him being either dead, absent from the story, or replaced by another character. Also he looks like this:

and look, before anyone decides to come for me on this, yes, I am aware this will probably get cleared up later and it’ll turn out this was just a bad translation but like… let me have this moment. let me wring every drop of joy I can out of this one, beautiful, chaotic moment. This one instant of a fanbase that has produced some of the worst discourse on the internet, one of the most inhospitable twitter environments out there, some of the CRINGIEST tiktoks I’ve ever seen.
Let me just laugh at their pain if only just for today

oh gods but that’s such a fucking stretch like 1. someone who doesn’t know German has to hear it and 2. someone who doesn’t know German has to say it. You’d have to be the most ignorant native English speaker to pronounce it that way, because not even by a stretch does that sound even just similar if the person saying it tries even… a little bit… to pronounce words the way they are supposed to be pronounced…
